The Infamous Tutu Stalker, the Jam Bandit, a NOLAdy, and to many, a Princess, are some of Ashe Mischief's more notorious identities. On a day-to-day basis, she's simply Ashe (formally Ashe H.R.), a young woman aspiring to be a lot and make the most out of her day-to-day experiences.
Ashe H.R. began her misadventures in mischief-making at a ripe, young age but did not fully appreciate what she could accomplish until much later in life. Under the guidance of high school and college photography professors, cat-whisperers, gallery owners, models, drunken writers and free spirits, an identity was born and Ashe Mischief sprang to life in New Orleans, attempting to take everyone by storm.
Artist's Statement:
I've always been adverse to writing statements about my work. It's always seemed futile at best to describe the process that no one really understands. Like any other person who does something they love, it's completely a chance operation. If inspiration hits, I find myself working diligently to please the muses but really a majority of my time uninspired and frustrated, working to a standard that is less than to my liking. What I do can best be regarded as a reaction to what I'm effected by: strong visual images, prose and poetry, attitudes and intellect.
Equipped to Kill: Canon Elan 7, Nikon Coolpix 4300, Vivitar v4000, Holga (with flash!), Polaroid i-Zone, Lomo Actionsampler, Ilford rc/fiber paper, Ilford black and white film, Fuji color film, and the occasional Adobe Photoshop CS for minor adjustments. Macintosh Powerbook G4. Various journals and notepads, wooden pencils and pleasing pens. (All equipment is fully endorsed by Ashe H.R. as being durable to her haphazardous methods, which include water submersion, throwing, and dropping.)
Inspirations (sans Perspiration): Ingmar Bergman, Julia Margaret Cameron, Francois Truffaut, Francesca Lia Block, Federico Fellini, Mark Seliger, David LaChapelle, Angelina Jolie, Audrey Hepburn, Betsey Johnson, Cyndi Lauper, Pat Benatar, the 80s, 60s Europe, David Bowie, Joan Jett, Jem and the Holograms, Jeanette Winterson, Denise Levertov, J.D. Salinger, EJ Bellocq, Carrie Bradshaw, Nylon magazine, Deborah Harry.
Likes: foreign cinema, that 80s aura, horse and pony songs, cookies and pie, modernism, post-modern allusions, photobooths, hip hop and hooray, record players and vinyl, unicorns, the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, dance parties, red balloons and top hats, Sex and the City, dinosaurs, perfect t-shirts, modern love, moose!, the occasional crafty knitting or sewing attempts, silver/grey and pink, cowgirls and cowboys, horror films, personaes.
Dislikes: Improper spelling and grammar, cars who pull into the pedestrain crosswalks, cut your heart out, "I'm trying to get past you," seafood and slimy vegetables, tourists, Mardi Gras, humidity, zombie movies, intolerance and racism.
Currently: Working on my senior thesis titled, " 'Other Ways To Show Your Feelings' : Sexual Perversion in Cinematic Adaptations"; preparing for the NOLA DIY & Media Expo on April 1st; finishing up MischiefMyDear.Com.; building an arsenal of tv shows available on DVD and interning at the Radici Gallery.
Not Forgetting, Thank Yous: To everyone who has helped, encouraged, inspired and kicked me in the ass when I needed it. To my mother for being amazing and supportive, and to my father for buying me my first "real" camera. To my best friend for always being vain enough to model for me and being the first person to "hire" me, and all of my other friends who've submitted to my beggings and pleadings. Thanks to Jamie at Radici for taking in an unknown girl for her first intern. And thank you all so much for visiting the site.
