To Catch a Thief: Lock Pick Earrings by Sleek & Destroy

by Ashley on January 20, 2014

steampunk earrings, lock pick earring set, sleek and destroy lock pick earrings

Every once in awhile, a company reaches out to me that excites me beyond control.  Even more rare is one that makes Garren go, “WHOA, WHAT? That’s awesome!”

This is what happened when Sleek and Destroy contacted me about their lock pick earrings.  Garren was like, “YOU NEED TO BUY THOSE!” (because they’re only $35 and that’s an awesome deal). I was so excited about writing about them, I didn’t even realize they actually offered to send me a pair.

Sometimes these things happen.

These beauties have been featured on BoingBoing and This is Why I’m Broke, and with good reason. They’re beautiful, with a gorgeous steampunk inspired etching on each pick.  They’re lightweight despite their size. (I know lots of ladies worry about long earrings being heavy… but I was genuinely surprised by how light they were!)  They feel really strong and sturdy; while I have yet to try out their picking abilities (mostly because our old New Orleans home has shitty locks), I have no doubts they’d actually make it through a break-in quite easily.

Not that I’m encouraging you to break into homes with them. ONLY YOUR OWN. When you lock yourself out of the house taking out the trash, but haven’t yet taken off your earrings after coming home from work.

Each set includes:
1 x Small hook pick
1 x Small half diamond pick
1 x Single ball rake
1 x C-rake
1 x S-rake
1 x Tension wrench

If you want to practice your lock picking skills (be swift like Dexter!), they recommend the MIT Guide to Lock Picking. Which you can read here.

I wore these out recently to Cirque de la Symphonie at the Louisiana Philharmonic Orchestra.  Breaking and entering seemed circus-appropriate, and I WAS.NOT.WRONG.  There was an amazing performer who was tied up and bound, only to later on remain tied up and bound… but now with additional pieces of clothing on.  If these were on her ears, she could upgrade from ropes to chains, and it’d be so much more impressive.

Has anyone else seen these around? I know a few of my gal pals have picked up pairs. I’d love to hear your thoughts on them if you’ve purchased them! I’ve been making more of an effort to wear bold earrings, and can’t wait to get more wear from these…

Oh, I really want those earrings! I’m coming out of lurkdom to say that, though I do believe we have “spoken” in DSTrashyDiva on FB. Those are subtle enough that I believe that many people won’t think they are anything but earrings. I imagine that my husband will fancy himself to be Sherlock to my Watson (because, of course he’s Sherlock) when I wear those.

Aww, Susan, thank you for coming out of lurkdom!

I love the Sherlock/Watson reference. That’s AWESOME. I’m kind of glad my fiance hasn’t figured that comparison out for himself ;)

And yes – I totally agree on the subtly! That’s what I really love about them. They just look like earrings… BUT THEY’RE NOT! ;D

Love these earrings. They are totally unique and I think they are still subtle enough that you could get away with wearing them almost daily. – Katy

Katy, I totally agree! I think that’s what was so compelling about them…. they just look like lovely, bold earrings. You wouldn’t even know what you were looking at otherwise!

Ohhhhh emmmm geeeeee. Lock picking earrings! I need these.

Aren’t they awesome & clever?? (PS – I hope you get them! Let me know if you do.)

Natalie January 21, 2014 at 1:33 am

Oh WOW! No, i’ve not seen them around, this is my first time seeing them and they are awesome! Not that I think I’d ever need them, but they certainly are clever and very pretty! (For some reason, they totally made me think of Veronica Mars!)

Ashley January 31, 2014 at 6:50 pm

Oh, I love the Veronica Mars reference! I could totally see her rocking something like that.
