february birchbox 2012, birchbox reviews, birchbox samples

This is the month where I confess that I’m not always impressed with Birchbox. Sometimes the samples they send aren’t so impressive, they’re superbly small (the ONE sample I was excited about I lost because it was so damned small), and I look at it thinking, “I PAID 10 DOLLAHS FOR DIS?”  It is, by far, an imperfect system– though I do appreciate that it has a system where we can leave feedback on the products.

My February 2012 Birchbox contained:

  • Eye Rock Designer Liner eyeliner strips: This was a full-sized pack, which is likely where the “value” from the box came from. If you’re a novice (or totally incompetent) at applying a liquid line, this could be great for you.  I found it was just as easy to create the eyeliner styles with real eyeliner, and then it didn’t stick to my eye in weird ways.  Another girlfriend received it, and since she has slight irregularities to her eyes (they aren’t even visible!) found that the product looked dramatically different on each eye. Overall: PASS ON IT.
  • Jouer Luminizing Moisture Tint: This sample is smaller than my pinky finger.  I wonder how the hell I can gauge how well I like this product when there isn’t enough to go more than a couple of days.  Compared to make-up tints I’ve used in the past, and loved, this one didn’t impress me. I felt like it didn’t do much to even out my skin tone, but instead just left my skin “dewy”– AKA shiny.
  • BLK DNM 11 Perfume**: With notes of incense, musk, black pepper and cedarwood, it’s surprisingly androgynous and delicious. On me, the black pepper and cedarwood were the prominent notes, and it was homey, but unusual. It didn’t make the Beau break out in to sneezing, and while we both liked the scent (it’s lovely!), agreed it just not my personality.
  • BENTA BERRY G-1 Moisturizing Face Cream**: This is the sample I was most excited for, to find it was also smaller than my little finger–so small that I headed towards the bathroom to use it, got distracted, and lost the damned thing. SERIOUSLY? Is that really fair? It’s a matte moisturizer from France (ooh la la!) with ingredients like blueberry, dead-nettle, jasmine, burdock, and mandarin.  I may just order this and try it out, because it seems lovely.
  • Supersmile Powdered Mouthrinse: This is a single use packet willed with saccharine powder. You add water, kind of mix it, and swish in your mouth.  Then you do it a second time, because a lot of the powder is still in the corners of the packet. In a pinch, or when traveling (Survivor, anyone?), I could see how these could be useful. But for every scenario in my own life, it’s just easier to stash a bottle of mouthwash or pack of gum around.
**Quick reference to the products I liked.

All right Birchbox fans– how’d you score this month? Or have you tried any of the products above (and love or hate them)?

Dude, my Birchbox this month was the SAME EXACT Birchbox as yours! I wasn’t a fan of anything this month really. I am giving it one more month because the score is 1-1.

I found this really awesome post that showed the 22 DIFFERENT BOXES (!!!) that went out and what was in them…. http://www.twochixbeautyfix.com/2012/02/febuary-2012-birchbox-spoilers.html

This month just kind of looked like a bust in general (but at least we didn’t get the lip stickers? Beth @ Budget Bytes did and they are RIDICULOUS).

Other than the eyeliner and tinted moisturizer, I got a dif box. That eyeliner is so dumb. 2 are kinda normal but they don’t really tilt UP like cat eyes and I apply liner to avoid my eye crease. These just didn’t work around wrinkles.

I’m kinda into the tinted moisturizer thing but I like Stila’s too. I’d rather try a BB cream. That’s next on my wish list.

I did get the Mineralogy cream concealer and OMG I am in love! A teeny bit covers SO well, no flaking or cakiness. It’s wonderful. Between that and some tinted moisturizer, I’m feeling pretty good about my skin.

LOVE the feedback option. I’ve earned enough points through that, and with the free shipping on that month’s box items, I got the full-sized concealer for free!

Man, I wish I were feeling tinted moisturizer. It just made me SO shiny. I used to love Stila’s, but I think lately I want something that evens my skin out more…. so it’s been primer + powder, and doing a pretty good job!

The eyeliner are SO ridiculous. I get that they retail for $13, but that doesn’t meant they can skimp on the rest of my box!

I’ve got about $40 in points right now…. and a cart sitting at $120! D: I need to cull down & figure out what I REALLY want… (though I may get the moisturizer, especially since they do let you return them within so much time??)

I got the gold lip tattoos and was frankly disappointed and insulted since they were so damn ugly…lip tattoos are one thing but GOLD ones? I tried the french moisturizer (whatever it was) and while the smell was lovely, it didn’t absorb whatsoever and it left a filmy residue, gross.

Birchbox was a major bummer this month..totally a disappointment.

Those lip tattoos looked RIDICULOUS. It’d be so much nicer to just get a lipstick sample instead.

That’s such a bummer, though good to hear about the moisturizer– it was the Benta Berry I talked about above! I only got a little dab before losing it, so hearing it’s not all it cracks up to be saves me some money!

The UK versions are very hit and miss as well! I enjoy seeing what you get in your versions though to compare. Looking forward to this months Glossybox in the UK as it’s a special Harrods version – I will post a review to my blog once I receive http://love212.org
Love your site!

I was just hearing about Glossybox in the UK recently– they get really great reviews! I can’t wait to hear what is in it, and I’ll have to pop over to your site to see how the UK Birchbox compares to the US version.

I live in Canada and I get the glymm bag (think birchbox) but I’m super impressed with past birchbox’s and can’t wait to get them one day. What I think is interesting though is that birchbox is the most specialized box out of all the monthly beauty bag’s I mean really, most of the time personalized means interchanging 1-2 items but birchbox’s can be completely different from one another. Good, sometimes, bad, sometimes. Thought this was interestting… k bye!
