My gym is right next door to Trashy Diva, which is THUH BEST incentive to work out IN THE WORLD. Currently sitting in the windows are the stunning new Velvet Dresses (including the super lusty, super sexy Victorian Mini, which I MAY fantasize about). I have the Garbo Coat, and the silk velvet is so delicious that I may sometimes take it out of my closet and rub it against my cheek.
But… it’s velvet. How do you wear velvet? Does it conjure up memories of 90210, middle school, and little girl’s Christmas dresses for you like it does for me? (Please don’t tell me that’s ONLY me– I felt old and alone yesterday when none of my students knew who Devon Sawa was.)
As I mentioned, I’m OBSESSED with the Victorian Mini, and I keep imagining myself as Kelly Walsh in it. (I’ve been watching the OG Melrose Place, and LAWD I envy a world where Kelly’s biggest problem is, “Aren’t I pretty enough, Jake?” I love Jennie Garth’s bunny face.) So let’s rough up the velvet with some fancy tights & layered knee socks, a denim & studded vest, and floral Dr. Martens.
I love the idea of mixing a velvet Ballerina Dress, a bright Saturday morning, brunch, and a trip to the Farmer’s market. This sweet little outfit reminds me of my wifey Joanna, as I could totally see her mixing the high-low styling in this outfit at her law firm and then going out for cocktails after, too.
Ooh, velvet! This is what I’m talking about– Monday morning and a lil’ Jackie O! inspiration. Even though this is OBV a Breakfast At Tiffany’s-inspired Audrey Pencil Dress, it’s a great way to punch up that grey-sky-filled-with-meetings-Monday, amIright? Though most of the pieces are out of my price range, I couldn’t help but load it up with Wendy Brandes jewelry– my favorite bedazzled lady!
Helloooooooo, Librarian/Secretary! This is filled with my favorite designers and it’s extra eye-candy-y. John Fluevog, Wendy Brandes, some sexy Wolford and super luxe Trashy Diva (the 1940s Velvet Dress, which is my FAV of their styles). This outfit is super posh, extra textured, cozy, and totally unrealistic for my life. But maybe if I was a librarian at James Bond’s secret spy library, it’d be perfect.
My perfect outfit– easy and put together with a definite style. Scarves have been my go-to accessory in place of my favorite necklaces, simply because they transition from 45 to 75 weather so easily. Add a great wide leg pant and a Breton stripe to a velvet Bustle Jacket and top with some colorful Converse. Playful pattern mixing and easy for playing with dogs. DONE & DONE.
Where does velvet fit in your life? Is it a yes, no, or maybe? Have you figured out any fab ways to wear it?

I visited Trashy Diva on Magazinr St. while in NO in December. That place??? Amazing. The clothes? Super amazing.
Okay. Velvet. All of the velvet pieces I own are vintage. I own four fabulous velvet blazers and I love to wear them over dresses, with my ruffle blouses, and with my leather skirts. I also own a velvet dress and not only does it feel amazing, it looks awesome.
For people that are on the fence about velvet I think they should start off with velvet accessories. Velvet shoe clips, shoes with velvet accents, and velvet purses are a fun an simple way to add velvet to a velvet fence sitter’s wardrobe.
Last thing: Rachel Zoe posted Instagram photos to her FB feed and her FW 2012 collection has a pair of MAJ velvet pumps. The fashion knock offs are sure to create their own version!

Yay! I’m sooo glad you visited Trashy Diva. They’re one of my all time favorite stores (my gym is also next door, which is amazing incentive to work out!).
Hearing how you wear velvet is amazing and inspiring, too– and so many vintage pieces! I bet they’re all beautiful.
I love velvet, especially during winter!

God yeah, I can’t imagine wearing it in summer! It’d probably kill me in this heat & humidity!
OMG ASHE THAT VICTORIAN MINI!!!!!!!
OMG what if we both showed up at the dance in it! It would be like Brenda + Kelly at prom.
Oh, please, please, please tell me more about the jacket in the Jackie O-inspired photo!
Love it!
Ok, I don’t normally WEAR velvet, although I think it is a beautiful material. But I normally associate it with dressing UP UP, or with drama majors. And never thought to pair it with those bitchin’ Docs, or with a LBD but in a dressed down sort of way. So you just made me consider velvet. On me. In an outfit. Like, maybe tomorrow.
