Penny [Candy] for Your Thoughts

by Ashe on August 26, 2010

My outfit of the day post a while ago I showed off the delightful bubble hem miniskirt & leggings Ureshii were kind enough to send to me.  The last piece I wanted to show off is the equally charming Ureshii Penny Candy dress.  While Emily argues otherwise, I’ll state that having this dress made made me a pain in the butt– these ladies were amazing and delightful through it all.

Step 1: Measurements & Fit

I sent along my measurements to Ureshii, who did a really great job custom sizing the dress for me (and I’m super proud of myself for not botching them up!).

One concern I had with the Penny Candy dress was where the bubbled hem began– with it poofing out at the natural waist, I felt it would hide what shape I have.  Of course, I’m awful at distinguishing between areas on my torso, and led Emily to worry about construction.  She was amazing at coming up with solutions though, and drawing out sketches of them.  Emily added a couple inches to the panel of the waist, making it more defined and the skirt flaring out at a more flattering point.

Step 2: Colorway

Originally I had wanted to go with my signature colors–black, white, and hot pink, making for a super versatile dress.  The Ureshii ladies pointed out that they was worried it’d create too much contrast in the dress, and drew up sketches for me– including ones with various shades of grey instead of black.  This led to me going back and forth for hours (maybe a couple of days), obsessing over what colors to get the dress made in.

When I came up with the Punch/Purple/Black combo, I received a quick emailed me saying we had landed the combo.  I completely agreed, and looking at it in the sketch just seemed RIGHT.

Final Project? Delightful

I was a bit worried the dress would be a bit too twee on me– cute clothes bring out the cute in me, but in an odd way.  I was delightfully surprised that wasn’t the case with the Penny Candy dress.  I loved how it was sweet, but really sexy.

The waistband and bust are really fitted because of the double layer of fabric– you may want to ask for an extra inch to be put in if snugness bothers you.  I will say that after a bit of wear, the fabric “warms up” and becomes much more comfortable to wear.

This dress is just SO fabulous– you can see how I wore it out for my birthday night dancing.  I wanted to be pretty, vibrant, and playful that night!  I also wore it to the opening of a play though, with solid black tights and heels for a slightly different and more mature variation.

I can say with confidence that Ureshii doesn’t fail to deliver.  I’m waiting for a Ureshii Marilyn Dress to make its way to me (they have REALLY amazing sample sale prices, so check them out!), and I’m currently saving up the pennies I find on the street for the Ureshii Mischief Dress

OMG – I LOVE IT- I wish you would have done this post on Monday though after see’n it on you I would have considered ordering this dress. I love the neckline & the straps..

I do want to say that The Ladies at Ureshii are WONDERFUL – just ordered my 1st dress from them last night. Amanda was great in helping me find a style of dress that I would like & be flatter on me & setting up the custom order for it. Very fast response time & Extremely EAZY odering. I just hope the pics of myself I sent to Emily don’t freak her out :-)

I am SO EXCITED I can’t wait for it to get here. I decided to order 1 for a wedding that the guy I am see’n has asked me to. I wanted something different & fun and suits my type of style also and Ureshii certainly does that. I ordered the Cha Cha style top with the Coming Up Roses Skirt in the Caribean Blue color.
Thank you Ashe for introducing me to this shop. I am saving more of my pennies for some tops & more dresses….

I’m so sorry I got it up late! I meant to have it up AGES ago….

I’m so, so glad to hear you’re having a great experience with the Ureshii ladies. Seriously, they’re simply fabulous. I can’t wait to see your dress– the cha cha top is SO cute, and I have no doubts it’s going to be a beautiful dress (and make you feel like a million bucks!)

Definitely! When I have more grown up events to wear it out to (that aren’t my dingy regular bar), solid black tights and nice heels dress it up really well!
