Yesterday I had to show off the Dita Von Teese & Jean Paul Gaultier for Melissa circus editorial, and today I have to show off snippest from other circus-themed editorials in the magazine. It’s not often my imagination is so captured…maybe it’s the circus styling, the carnivalesque that continues inspire & captivate me (as in the past more than once). Those elements capture me in all my great loves– literature, photography, fashion….
This first set is almost macabre in its cartoonish, playful nature. It’s unnerving and discomforting in its simplicity. It reminds me of the carnival where you’d go in for some card games and laughs and come out losing your soul…

The next set calls to mind some circus imagery, but also some 80s stylings… the big crinolines, the big hair, the polka dots… I’d love to go to an 80s dance party where everyone was dressed like this and the lights made you dance in a sea of rain drops….

The last set calls to mind that dark, sexy, almost sinister carnival world, that’s debaucherous and a little rough. It’s not the circus for children to go to, but more like the one your mother and father would steal away in to the night to see… I adore the studded knees on the black pants. What a subtle but powerful statement (and so easy to DIY)

Suddenly I feel my fall style inspirations coming from an all new direction.

Brilliant! Love the juxtaposition of those in-your-face primary colours, with their “aw shucks!” simplicity next to the eerie masks and possible nefarious goings-on. What designer are they advertising? The plasticky looking material on some of the shoes brings to mind some past Vivienne Westwood collections…but, I don’t think that is it.

Oh, they’re a continuation of yesterday’s spread for Melissa– they’re a brazilian shoe company that makes bubble gum scented jellies… they did do a collection with Vivienne Westwood, so you’re not off!
