Fashion has Brains

Edited by Ashe

Every week I am always surprised by the selection of posts we receive here at IFB.  I think back to before I started my blog, the discrimination I felt working in retail and adoring fashion, because it was shallow and it wasn’t academic.  Now I look at the community I am a part of and think– how could anyone accuse fashion enthusiasts of being shallow? Or fashion designers, lovers of style?  Indeed, like any frowned upon medium or niche, fashion has brains; it has ingenuity, it has controversy, it has creativity, and it has depth.

This week I want to celebrate those putting fashion and intellect together, to show that there’s more than meets that glittering eye…

Oh, and if you’re looking for something to do this summer… IFB is looking for interns!

Wow! This post just addressed my thoughts. I’m a mathematician by profession who writes poems, short stories and well novels [of which none has yet been completed]. I’m a debate trainer as well. But fashion is a great passion of mine that I started a fashion blog a year back. Among my literary and fashions blogs, the fashion blog has gotten well ahead. I enjoy more blogging about it. But then a close friend, an English major and a debate trainer as well, has started criticizing my fashion blogging calling it “vain” and “unadmirable”. Haha! Guess what? I didn’t even debate with her. Why should I if the critique is not even in this world called fashion? It’s a waste to try to convince them, they are not capable of understanding especially if they don’t even have a clue of it. In short, they’re just not fashion!

Regarding the general perception that all fashionistas are dumb and shallow:. One cannot change this stereotype alone, one must simply go on everyday disproving this erroneous thesis through practical example and sound argument. (Indeed, the Manolo had to just chastise the well-educated person who described Donatella Versace as stupid. She has many visible problems, but stupidity is no where to be found among them. She is the smart woman who has demonstrated her capability in the very public way.)

In the meantime, the Manolo suggests you read his friend Linda Grant’s new book, “The Thoughtful Dresser”. Here is the very intelligent woman, who is the widely respected journalist and novelist, who has written the book all about loving clothing and fashion, and how it is the honorable and life-affirming pursuit.

You have put in words very strong arguments addressing this erroneous perceptions about fashionistas. “The thoughful dresser” sounds a great read.
