White Before Memorial Day

by Ashe Mischief on April 8, 2010

While I know you’re not supposed to wear white after Labor Day, I’ve never known when it’s supposed to be “socially acceptable” to start wearing white…not that I wear much white to begin with.  The whole rules & etiquette behind wearing white have always bothered me, not to mention the potential for stains and dirt.  I’m just not classy enough to wear it.  And while I’m not classy enough to wear it… I AM classy enough to accessorize with it.

As the weather is warming up in New Orleans, I can’t help but want lighter, brighter accessories for the Spring and Summer.  My Hayden Harnett bag is great, but so heavy, bulky… it kind of weighs a girl down.

I received this zippered hobo courtesy of Handbag Heaven, and it was love at first and second sight… I loved the femininity of the ruching and ruffling combined with the slightly harder edge the exposed zippers provide.

Like many gals, I’m totally enamoured with the pocket count– each ruched side is a pocket, with 1 zippered & 2 open pockets on the inside and 1 outer zippered pocket as well.  The interior is lined in brown cotton with a white floral motif– adorable! I love extra attention to detail like that.

What really impresses me is how well the bag is constructed overall; I tend to get really picky about buying purses– either spending a lot on a bag so that I can have high craftsmanship and leather, or buying something horribly cheap (and knowing it’ll fall apart in weeks).  For $59.95, I think I’d be hard-pressed to find something comparable… (maybe at TJ Maxx/Marshall’s/Ross? I always find I rarely like their purse selection though).  I think my only wish for the bag would be a longer strap– at 7″, it hugs me right under the arm…

Not only is the selection at Handbag Heaven full of great steals, they’re also based out of Greenwood, Indiana– just a mere 45 minutes (and home of many shopping excursions of yore) from my old home base of Bloomington! Next visit to the Mid-west, I’ll stop by and say hi…

I don’t even know when Labor Day is, does that mean I can wear white all year?

Like you I don’t wear much white anyway, I’m too clumsy, I once wore a pair of white jeans and I’d been in the pub 10 seconds before I got cigarette ash on the knee!

I love the zips on that bag though, maybe acessories is the way to go!

The rules of white were ~ Memorial Day until Labor Day ~ White was/is considered a sailors color and was worn basically over what was would be the yatching season in high society. So basically the last full weekend of May through the First full weekend of September is when 1 can officially wear white.

Now that has changed in the last few years, designers have come out with “winter white” which seems to me to more of a lighter ivory color than a stark white. Which makes the “rules” mentioned above obsolete.

I have a white leather purse I bought at Wilsons going out of business sale a few years ago ~ I use whenever I want to. I LOVE IT and refuse to worry about what season it is for purse usage.

I tend to stay away from white pants & skirts, dresses for the same reason I just am not classy enough to pull of wearing it & not ending up spilling my coffee all over it..

Thanks for the history lesson! Between you and Vee Ann on Facebook, I kind of “get” why people were so stringent on wearing white… though I’m glad it’s less in practice today!

I totally ignore the white after Labor rule, there are winter whites you know. Love the bag though, I’m obsessed with zipper detailing right now. I’ll definitely have to check out their site.

I don’t get the ‘white rule’ either. but I have the same problem like you, I always make it dirty so I don’t wear much white anyway. What I hate is white pants in winter, especially on guys.

The bag’s a good white-ness solution. Southern girl that I am, I had to stop myself from putting on some white jeans today in the Pac NW!
