The Dramatis Personae: Satine [Moulin Rouge]

by Ashe Mischief on June 1, 2009

With all of my talk of theatrics, top hats, corsets, and ruffled panties, I’m genuinely surprised and ashamed of myself that I haven’t featured the delightful, gorgeous, complex and stylish Satine as a member of my Dramatis Personae yet.

Which is really baffling, considering her style combines many of my style favorites and inspirations of all time.  Satine is the sort of woman who could put the well-oiled and well-coiffed Dita Von Teese to shame.  From full piece nightwear that includes garters, silk robes, and silk stockings, to extravagant hair pieces and neck wear, she personifies the dramatis persona.

I love the idea of incorporating elements of Satine’s style in to my daily life:
♥ Wool berets, 1940s hats, top hats and gilded headpieces.
♥ 1940s inspired suits– nipped waists, structural, beautiful suits.
♥ Bustled skirts and noteworthy necklines.
♥ Fancy legwear– fishnets, silk stockings with garters.
♥ Statement jewelry and elbow length gloves.
♥ A bold red lip.
♥ Rhinestones, sequins, fringe adornments.
♥ Simplicity combined with eye catching & attentive details vs. over-the-top adornment.

I was just thinking the other day about how much I want to re-watch this film. I must definitely track down a copy.

Ohhhh! Now I want to watch this again – the costumes were decadent and gorgeous. I love the berets/hats idea (by the way, can we bring flapper hats back, please?) and adornments, and legwear, and gloves… Quelle icon! xo

Mmm, I totally want to start a hatvolution, and Satine’s would definitely be on my list. Love.

They really did create a look for her that was all her own – it was very elegant and flashy without being over-the-top nonsense. That’s such a great little movie!

Wasn’t this before Nicole’s face became permanently frozen into a Chanel beauty mask? I love the idea of berets, sequins and the red lip. Since I’m not as tall as the actress, I like to keep my silhouettes simple and let my accessories do the flashing.

I have to see this again. I loved everything she wore, she was beautiful throughout the whole movie.
I think you could definitely use some elements of her dress in your daily life, adding a little theater never hurt anyone.

I adore this film, it has been one of my favourites for years, I wrote an essay on it for Post modernism class at college when it came out.

I can remember being amazed by her tiny corseted waist the first time I saw it!

@dreamsequins – LOL about the Chanel beauty mask! She does seem to have hit the botox a little too often…

@Retro Chick – Her waist IS so tiny in it-I’m sure the horror stories about the cracked rib did nothing to help corsetry’s reputation, either. You also brought out the film geek in me– I’m dying to know more about your paper!

@apricot tea. – Yes to her red lips! I’m amazed at how she made red hair + red lips look so casual. I’d look like a clown.

Ladies, it is obviously clear that we need a Twitter/Moulin Rouge watching party.

Moulin Rouge is my favorite movie. I watch it 6+ times a year. Kind of ridiculous.
I love Satine too. I envy her style.
