Girl Crushin’: Daphne Wilder [Because I Said So]

by Ashe on January 26, 2009

Because I Said So is one of those chick flick-esque films that I masochistically love, even though I really don’t want to own up to that (so pretend you didn’t read that last sentence).

That being said, when I become une femme d’un certaine age, I kind of hope that I have the fun and whimsical fashion styling of Daphne Wilder. Business owner, caterer & baker, and zany mother, her skirt & sweater ensembles make up the most memorable wardrobe in the film.

One of my favorite looks of hers is the one immediately below– while very simple in many ways, the details really make up the outfit. The double collar under the perfect white sweater; the black belt layered on top of the black sweater; a voluptuous white skirt that extends for ages, brightened by a red rose (I think Carrie Bradshaw would approve). This is an outfit I’d probably even wear now!

Daphne’s a lady after my own heart with her overzealous love of polka dots (her daughter’s even wear the signature print at her wedding). I think a signature print is a lovely and playful way to establish a fashion identity, which Daphne does (in fact, those polka dots certainly set up much of the plot, as her youngest daughter loathes the print, wears the dots, and tries to find love with her meddlesome mother watching every step).

Many of her outfits center around this basic styling– a full circle skirt, with coordinating blouse, and delightful accessories. The only way I’d par back is by nixing the scarf with the collar… perhaps a bit too uptight for my own taste.

That all being said… if anyone knows where I can find a Johnny of my own, please email me….

I loved all of the styling in this movie but yes…Daphne’s was the absolute best. I even had to buy the dvd. LOL.

I love this movie, Diane Keaton is pure delight in it. “What’s an orgasm feel like” is my favorite part… lol. I totally agree that Daphne is such a stylish woman (as is Diane Keaton) I loved the polka dots and themed wedding, so much that I may have to copy it someday.
