I recently found out about the The 3/50 Project, a fantastic initiative to funnel money back in to your local economy and support local business, rather than shopping with chain retailers.
The premise is that with $50 each month, you spend it at and support 3 local establishments– no chain stores here!
What I love about this is how inclusive it is of independent business– it can be your local clothing store, farmer’s market, bagel shop, music store, coffee house…. it’s just up to you to head to a locally own & operated business and support them instead of your big box chains.

Here in little ole Bloomington, I can look forward to the following companies supporting the project:
Abracadabra Graphics
Argentum Jewelry
Landlocked Music
London Dog, LLC
Smith’s Shoe Center
Trojan Horse
I hope to see the local list grow more and more, as this awesome movement continues to grow larger. Check here to find participants in your city as well!

What a lovely idea :) I will definitely make sure to shop more at local stores. They are always friendlier places to shop at, and you can find the most amazing unique pieces. Oh, and I was actually browsing Steampunk clothing websites before I did that post, they are SO cool!
I heard about this last week – it is truly a great effort. I have traded the convenience of Amazon.com for walking into an ACTUAL book store. :)
Love this initiative and it looks like people are responding well so far! Lots of chatter about it in Seattle.
Is it wrong if I work the price-match magic on local, non-chain boutiques? Isn’t it a win:win? I don’t know how I should feel about it…okay, I’ll stop rambling.
thats a super idea :D … & i love your header too.. i would say new but it may not be? i usually read you from my google reader :)
I am SO down for this. I’m probably going to post it on my blog. Thanks for the info on this one, babe.
I love this! It can be hard to explain in a few words how important local shopping is. I’m glad a site has done it so well!
