Scando-Style by the Fabulous Sarah Von [of 'Yes and Yes']

by Ashe on September 22, 2009

This post is by the gorgeous & delightful Sarah Von over at Yes and Yes– which is a must read if you’re not already reading it! It’s chockful of great tips for living an adventurous life, for giving back to the world & exploring it to the fullest, and most importantly–giving back to yourself.

We can all natter on ad infinitum about Parisian fashion (So sophisticated! All those stripes and scarves!) and Italian style (So much Sexy! Such high heels!) but we’re not here to add our voices to the choir that sings the praises of these much lauded styles. Let’s talk Scando-style.

I’m not sure that the ladies of Norway/Sweden/Denmark/The Netherlands get the style kudos they so rightly deserve. They contend with some of the worst weather in the world while somehow managing to stay warm annnnd look sexy and hip. Let’s take a look at what they do to rock this warm, edgy look so successfully.

scandostyle1
Via Feber and The Conveyor Belt

  • Dark Colors
I was going to attempt an argument here about black attracting heat and therefore keeping Scandinavian women warm. But that’s ridiculous. Just like the rest of the world, I suspect that these ladies have figured out that black is slimming, hip and doesn’t show dirt. And it also keeps you warmer than white! Win/win/win!
  • Layers (Upon Layers)
I love the way these ladies rock the ‘tights with the skirts and a tank top under a sweater with a jacket and a scarf’ look. They somehow manage to accomplish this without looking like bag ladies – something I struggle with when I wear more than two things at once. I think the trick here lies in layering similar colors, in thin layers and at varying lengths. That, and being a really hot, thin Swedish 19 year old.
  • Sexily Scuffed
The ladies of Scandinavia seem to have cornered the market on that hard to replicate sexy/messy look. Deliciously scuffed boots, stretched out t-shirts that slip off tanned shoulders, sweaters wearing just a little bit thin. Again, when I do this I look like I’ve been shopping out of a dumpster, but it looks hobo haute on these ladies.
  • The Scarf
Okay, so French women rock the scarf pretty successfully, too. But the girls of the northern regions can pile their scarfs atop outfits of grey wool and artfully torn jeans and look like a million dollars. Gorgeous!
  • Natural Beauty
When paddling my way though pages of French fashion, I can’t help but suspect that these lovely ladies? They lead lives of champagne and cigarettes and carefully applied red lipstick. There are many, many appointments with many, many people who color and pluck and paint them into perfection. But I have like to engage in the fantasy that our Scandinavian ladies get that complexion from yogurt and muesli breakfasts and that sexily mussed hair is *actual* real, live bed head. And if these things aren’t true, well damn if those girls can’t fake it!

If I were to attempt Scandinavian style, it’d look something like this:

Scando-Style

Scando-Style by hovercraft

Maren has lived the entirety of her young life in Bodo, helping her grandparents run a BnB that caters to the midnight-sun seeking tourists. She spends her Sundays rowing through the Fjords with her boyfriend Hans and picking cloud berries in the mountains. When winter blows in, she saunas with her schoolmates. She loves throwing open the door of the sweat lodge and seeing the northern lights reflected in the snow.

Do you love the style of Scandinavian sisters? Which country’s style do you covet?

Thanks, Miss Von, for the amazing post on Scandinavian stylings!

I have always loved this style of dressing and am trying to rework my wardrobe to include more clothing that are of this style. It started with my new love for grey that I developed a few years ago and has grown from there. So simple, funky, yet modern. Love it.

I seem to dress like this but then I live in Scandinavia. No heels, dark colours.
I have supplemented my wardrobe with some colour, otherwise black it is.

I agree! The scandinavian style blogs are some of my favorites! Aside from their perfect blonde hair {grrrr}, they always manage to look unique and a bit edgy. They also manage to be sexy without necessarily doing the typical short/tight skirt and high heel thing. And they always come across as sweet and approachable…

I want to use the phrase “so much sexy” now, as often as possible.

As to the perfect blonde: that’s called getting your hair toned at the hair dresser for most of us ;). Plus I made myself take a step away from whatever blond hair tone I had by getting it toned darker and with red highlights.
If I was a size two or three smaller I’d totally go for these edgy fun small designers but there was the size and then there’s a money issue.
Finnish designers make VERY nice clothing, and it’s not marimekko I’m talking about. There are also alot of fun Swedish designers. I unfortunately know nothing of Denmark, but finnish and swedish, definately.
Otherwise the “coolest” fashion at the moment is 80s influenced. If I’d saved clothing from growing up during the early and late 80s I’d be VERY hip now.
Very High Heels are not for me. I want flat shoes thank you very much.

I had no idea there was such thing as Scando-style, but now I feel enlightened! I love that winter is coming and I might be able to us some of these things in my daily style routine. At least I’ve got the blond hair going for me :)

As a Norwegian/Finnish (and by birth, Canadian) woman I have to say this article was DEAD on. Everytime I go to Helsinki or Trondheim, I am always in awe of how well they wear their clothes – last time I went, I spent my whole time trying to get the scarf wrapping down pat.

And also so jealous that the Scandinavian “thin beauty” did not get passed down to me :(

I love Scandinavian style, more so than French (conservative-boring) and Italian (sexy-boring). It’s got a rocker-ish edge that I really like, which is probably why I also like London street style.

SnapandPrint, I can totally see it from your posts! There’s definitely a Scando-influence there, and I love how you’re working it.

Jessika & Lusty, it’s great to receive confirmation from those from there (or 2nd gen) that Sarah’s right on with the tips!
Jessika, I love your hair styling tips! If you have any recommendations for Swedish & Finnish designers, I’d LOVE to see them–I’m pretty ignorant in the area…

I completely agree with you Tara! They’re always so amazing to look at….

Wendy, please do. I hope you use it when talking about Paul McC.

Jen, I totally hear you on the rocker-ish edge, and the similarities with some London street styles!

Brooke, please let me know if & how you work these in to your style.

Ooh yeah, I’m right there with ya Sarah! I’ve always thought French fashion was a little…boring. I’m much more into Scandinavian & London styles! Some of the more feminine/whimsical/retro-inspired looks at Hel-Looks are to DIE for.

I’ve traveled to an awful lot of places, but the ladies in Copenhagen get my vote for best dressed, hands down! My favorite Scandinavian desingers are currently Noa Noa (Denmark) and Attila Design (Finland).

I love, love, love that fourth picture with the hooded scarf and jacket. And coming from a city that can be very cold as well, I agree that anyone who manages to stay warm AND look stylish is full of win.

Great post. Italian styles and fashions have long been my favourite but I think you’re right that Scandinavian style is largely overlooked. Plus the Scandos have a great knack of finding all the best stuff in H+M!
Btw I am so loving the way the scarf is worn in the second to last picture.

Audi, thank you for the recommendations of Noa Noa and Attila Design! I’ll have to check them out.

Anna Jane, is that scarf wonderful? It absolutely makes me swoon!

Sheena, it’s very cold here in the Mid-West too! I tend to give up during the winter when there’s two feet of snow on the ground…

Oooh yes… even in France, they’re drooling over Scandinavian style… it’s very hot right now, and if they blogged in English, I’m sure we’d all be reading Scandinavian blogs. There are a lot of amazing ones out there.

Jennine, yes! God I wish more of them were in English (or I could find an easy translator or something). Their style there is so amazing, I’m not at all surprised the French are drooling over it…

My thing this year has been boots

Knee high boots are the highest I’ll go, but they seem to top off every outfit perfectly.

Great post! The last image you posted is me, taken in Vancouver’s Gastown neighbourhood (in Canada), and I am actually wearing mainly local designs.

The grey blazer is from Obakki (obakki.com) and the long grey alpaca scarf is a Larry (wearelarry.com).

Terri,
Thank you SO much for commenting! I absolutely LOVE that everything you purchased are local designers (and I appreciate you sharing them–I can’t WAIT to check them out!). And for your natural bed head– color me so jealous… My bed head ends up looking like rats made a nest in it….

Aw, nice to see Scandinavian style getting some interest, there are some achingly hip scandies out there. I live in Norway and its already minus degrees, so (one of) my latest purchase was a snood – handy hood and scarf in one!

If you are interested there are lots of cool Scandinavian designers and bloggers who write in english out there, including me (http://styletastic.wordpress.com).

Check out these designers:
