The Dramatis Personae: Desperately Seeking Susan

by Ashe Mischief on October 12, 2009

It’s been a while since I’ve done the Dramatis Personae, and this weekend a huge bolt of inspiration hit me.  I happened to catch Desperately Seeking Susan this weekend on tv, and here are the important things to note:

  • Rosanna Arquette as Roberta is like, so buh-dorable in this it ain’t even funny.  A far cry from her role in Crash! (that’s fo’sho).  She’s super mega adorable when in her magician’s assistant costumes (there aren’t enough pictures of her in the film, so I found you videos).
  • Magician’s Assistants, whether classy or trashy, get THE.BEST.OUTFITS.  There is no surprise as to why Magician’s Assistant is in my top professions, along with: Circus Performer, Drive-In Owner, Unaccomplished Celebutante, and Rich Housewife.
  • I have a SUPER MEGA HUGE CRUSH on Aidan Quinn as Des.  Why are 80s boys so delicious? And why don’t I have one of my own?

Oh boo, that thumpin’ you hear’s just mah heart <3<3<3

  • The 1980s are, single-handedly, the best decade ever. I’m sorry, but SO TRUE. And the costumes in this prove it: fishnet shirts, sequined jackets (so hip!), chunky necklaces, studded boots, frilly prom gowns, lace leggings and shirts, and a bad ass Dia de los Muertos trailing train case.
  • Gawths dancing in a club to Madonna. That’s like, the best thing ever. Even better than Madonna dancing in the club to her own tunes (that’s just post modern irony).

I’ve never seen this movie! I think it’s on my list of “to watch” though. I agree – magician’s assistants have the best outfits!

I saw it again very recently too and I thought it held up GREAT! I really enjoyed seeing it. And I agree with you on the ’80s. People had more fun, were less uptight.

Agreed! The 80s is the best decade ever. I’m so proud I was born in it!

This movie was, hands-down, one of the most influential on me fashion-wise: that lace top, that crazy jacket, studded ankle boots, etc. Just perfect!!

My sister and I used to watch this movie all the time, but I haven’t seen it in ages. Thanks for the nostalgia, I must re-watch soon to see all the fabulous 80′s style!
