Dear Midwest...
I've never been one for fashion pet peeves. I've been wearing footless tights since before they were in style, like skinny jeans because they fit my legs, hips, AND waist, and really only shop trends because it usually means something I like is more easily accessible. I've never been one for fashion pet peeves... until I moved to the Midwest.
So I present to you an open letter.
Dear Population of an Unnamed Mid-Sized College Town in the Mid-West,
Despite changes in the weather, it is unacceptable to wear some combination of the following outfit (unless it is midnight and you are running to the store for smokes or tampons):
1. Flip Flops or Uggs, paired with
2. Sweatpants, leggings, or pajama bottoms, topped by
3. A ratty wife beater or oversized college sweatshirt, finished with
4. A full face of make-up and perfectly "messed" hair.
Sadly, this outfit is quite dominant in our city. Individually, I may not have problems with many of these items. Leggings can be great under dresses and skirts, especially in the winter when tights are too thin. Uggs can be warm, comfortable, and cozy on cold winter days, when the roads are caked with snow and ice (heck, I'm even tempted to buy myself a pair for that reason alone). During the summer time I practically live in wife beaters, and often think that nothing is sexier on a woman.
But in combination, these pieces create a sloppy look that shows you have little concern for your personal appearance. It isn't more time consuming or difficult to put on a pair of jeans, and you'll look 100x better instantly. And if it's really cold, a wife beater and leggings contradict the warmth provided by your precious Ugg boots. Girls, have a little pride in your appearance!
Signed,
A Dramatic Mischief

Imo, flip flops and uggs should banned all year round - the former only being allowed on or around beaches. Men should be banned from wearing 'wife beaters' - thats a personal pref, I feel they look sloppy.

Elaine-- I absolutely agree! The most uncomfortable shoe I've ever worn was a flip flop! If it weren't for the fact my crappy suede boots are about to die out, and I'm likely to move someplace even COLDER, I'd ban Uggs in a heartbeat.
Sadly, Marlon Brando is one of the few men who could make a wife beater look sexy. But that doesn't mean that look should leave the house!

I don't get how people can wear pj bottoms and sweatpants out of the house. They look terrible, not to mention cold anytime past early September. I actually saw a girl downtown wearing full pajamas the other day. It was very odd.
Maybe you should start giving out fashion police tickets.

I agree with Elaine - ban them! Ha - I think the wife-beater got a second life with KFed ...unfortunately for us all...
love your blog too and its point of view - want to link you. Your profile pic is beautiful.

Lara-- I've contemplated it! Once I wore pajamas to an 8 a.m. class, only to them go home, shower, and change.
Riz-- Thank you! And please do. I'd love to link back to you (and as soon as I pop in to my control panel, will do so!).

Change "mid-west" to Florida and you have where I live. It's a shame. These people CAN do better, but they invest in nothing but crap that's not fit to wear outside the house. I don't get it.

I'm afraid this look is far more widespread than you think!

Lady Julianne and Meg-- I hear rumors that there are places where people do not dress like this! Perhaps one day we will all find such a place?
